The Food System
Climate Impact

The Scale

The food system contributes up to 30% of human caused greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally.

That's more GHG emissions than all aviation and ground transport, heating and cooling systems combined.

How?

The way food is produced
is the main determinant of GHG emissions within the food system
Most emissions in the food system occur at the agricultural production stage. Around half of these emissions are nitrous oxide and methane originating from farm animals. The other half is largely down to land use changes - principally due to deforestation. Relatively fewer emissions come from post production food processing and distribution.

Knowing where food comes from is not enough

Procurers require full supply chain transparency in order to verify the production approach taken to the food they are procuring.
how procurers can act
"Procurers today must ask how food is produced
or accept their likely contribution to atmospheric levels of nitrous oxide and methane plus carbon dioxide linked to catastrophic deforestation"
